Wedding coloured smoke bombs

The Truth About Coloured Smoke Bombs at Weddings (And Safer Alternatives to Consider)

Coloured smoke bombs have become one of the most eye-catching wedding trends of recent years. Those vibrant clouds drifting behind a couple can look incredible in photos — bold, editorial, and full of drama. But behind the scenes, many venues (especially across Hampshire, West Sussex, and the New Forest) are actively discouraging or banning them altogether — and for good reason. If you’re thinking about using smoke bombs on your wedding day, here’s what you really need to know — plus safer alternatives that still give you that wow factor. Why Smoke Bombs Are So Popular There’s no denying their appeal. They add: When everything goes right, they can create unforgettable images. But weddings aren’t controlled environments — and that’s where the risks start to show. The Risks Most Couples Don’t Consider 1. They’re Not Props — They’re Pyrotechnics Smoke bombs burn to create coloured smoke, meaning they: They’re closer to fireworks than décor — which is exactly how venues and insurers view them. 2. Staining Can Permanently Damage Clothing The coloured smoke contains dye particles that: And because wind direction is unpredictable, it only takes one gust to ruin an outfit. 3. Fire Risk — Especially in Rural Venues Many venues in Hampshire and the New Forest are: Fire risk in these environments is taken extremely seriously. In fact, the New Forest National Park Authority enforces strict rules banning any kind of fire or ignition source on open land due to wildfire risk (New Forest National Park) Even small heat sources can cause major fires in dry conditions — which puts smoke bombs firmly in the “high risk” category. 4. Smoke Can Trigger Alarms and Emergency Callouts Smoke bombs don’t just look dramatic — they behave like real smoke. Fire services have reported incidents where smoke devices triggered emergency callouts because people believed there was a fire (Hampshire Fire & Rescue) At a wedding, that could mean: 5. Insurance and Liability Issues Because they’re classed as pyrotechnics: The Reality: High Risk for a Short-Lived Effect Smoke bombs typically last under a minute. But the risks can last much longer: For many couples, it simply isn’t worth it. Safer (and Venue-Friendly) Alternatives The good news? You can achieve stunning, creative wedding photos without the risks. 1. Natural Petal Confetti 2. Bubbles 3. Lighting & Editing Effects Professional photographers can recreate a “smoke-like” atmosphere using: No risk — same visual impact. 4. Sparklers (Where Permitted) (Still subject to venue approval.) 5. Fabric, Veils & Motion 6. Champagne Spray & Real Moments Often these produce the most memorable photos of the entire day. Coloured smoke bombs can look incredible — but they come with real risks: That’s why so many venues across Hampshire, West Sussex, and the New Forest are choosing to ban them — or heavily restrict anything similar. The key takeaway? You don’t need smoke bombs to create beautiful wedding photos. Safer alternatives not only protect your venue and your outfits — they often result in more natural, timeless images too. Before planning any effects for your wedding, always check your venue’s policy. It could save your dress, your venue — and your entire day.

Sean Boon wedding performance

How much does a wedding magician charge? What exactly are you paying for? Find the best value.

If you’re planning your wedding and looking at entertainment, one thing quickly becomes clear: wedding magician prices vary a lot. In the UK, fees usually range from £200 to £800, with most professional magicians averaging around £350–£450. But understanding the reasons behind that range is more important than the number itself. I’m Sean Boon, a wedding magician performing across Hampshire, West Sussex, the New Forest, and Surrey, and I want to give you an honest look at pricing and more importantly, why value matters more than price. The Cheaper End (£200–£300) At the lower end, you’ll usually find magicians who are newer to weddings. That can mean:   Less experience managing groups of guests Limited confidence in handling real wedding environments A less professional appearance or manner Hourly pricing that can feel restrictive (and stressful) if your schedule runs behind Low rates often mean a high volume of weddings to make the work sustainable. That can lead to burnout and rushed performances, the last thing you want on your big day. The High-End (£600–£800) Some magicians position themselves as premium, charging upwards of £600. They might work fewer weddings a year and focus on high-end venues. Here’s the truth most couples don’t realise: a higher price creates a perceived sense of value, but it doesn’t automatically mean better magic. These performers are often buying the same cards and props, and practicing just as much as anyone else. The difference is mostly marketing and positioning, not the actual experience your guests will have as many are performing the same core tricks. Location & Cost of Living Where your wedding is and where the magician is based has a big impact on pricing. Weddings in Surrey, London or parts of Hampshire often have higher overall budgets because of the local cost of living. Travel, fuel, and time commitments are factored in fairly by professional magicians, which is why prices vary depending on venue location. Where I Perform & How I Work I charge starting from £350, and my approach is focused on value and experience, not inflated perception. I regularly perform at some of the most beautiful venues across the region. For example: Minstead Lodge Upwaltham Barns Queens Hotel Southsea Chilworth Manor Southampton Southend Barns Southdowns Manor Audleys Wood Wherever the venue, my focus is the same: to seamlessly enhance your day and create moments your guests will remember. No Hourly Rates I don’t charge by the hour. (See my other blog post explaining why) weddings don’t run on a clock, and the last thing you want is a magician cutting things short because of time. I work around your schedule, whether that’s during:   Drinks reception Wedding breakfast In-between moments while guests are waiting Optional extras can also be included, bringing the total to around £425, depending on what you want for your day. Why Couples Choose Me Most couples aren’t just looking for someone who can perform a few tricks. They want:   Entertainment that blends naturally into the day Ice-breaking interaction for guests Memorable moments that people will talk about long after At £350, you’re not paying a beginner’s rate, (over 20 years of experience) but you’re also not paying inflated prices based on perception. You’re getting experience, reliability, and genuine magic…well as real as I can make it look! Wedding magician pricing can feel confusing. Cheap doesn’t always equal value, and expensive doesn’t automatically mean better. What matters is experience, professionalism, and how well your magician fits into your wedding day. If you want someone who brings energy, connection, and unforgettable moments to your celebration, whether it’s Minstead Lodge, Upwaltham Barns, Lythe Hill, Farnham Castle, or any other venue across Hampshire, West Sussex, the New Forest, or Surrey, I’d love to be part of your wedding. With the right magician, the magic isn’t just tricks, it’s moments your guests will never forget. CLICK TO ENQUIRE

Do you charge by the hour for your wedding magic?

Why I Charge by the Event, Not by Hour Unlike many magicians who operate on an hourly basis and are booked for specific time slots, I adopt a different approach.     My pricing is based on the entire event and the particular moments during the day when my presence is required. This method ensures that my service is flexible and dedicated to providing entertainment without the constraints of strict time limits.   The significance of this approach became apparent years ago at a wedding held at Skylark Golf & Club in Fareham, Hampshire.   I was scheduled to perform after the speeches into the evening, arriving promptly at pm as requested. However, I arrived to find the couple still engaged on the last course and speeches. While waiting outside, I saw another wedding supplier arrive and commented about their need to get in the room and only being booked until 9 pm, implying they might leave early if schedule did not suit them.   This incident highlighted a common issue with time-slot bookings: How would you feel if a supplier left prematurely because their time expires, regardless of whether their services are fully delivered? Such practices are unfair.   My commitment is to remain until my role is complete, ensuring that as many guests experience entertainment without interruption or concern about clocking out. This philosophy guarantees that my focus remains solely enhancing your special day without unnecessary restrictions. Many other magicians take additional bookings on the same day, I want to give 100% to my client and not let either person down, So I have an arrival time and whether your event is on schedule or not, I will begin when the moment is needed and continue on giving you peace of mind that I am not doing a vanishing act and going to another booking.   But I will be realistic with you, for an event with 50-150 guests I would say that approx 2 hours is adequate time for me to entertain that number.
