Let me let you in on a little secret, as a magician I probably shouldn’t share secrets but this is different… one that will make your wedding reception run smoother, faster, and with far fewer confused guests hovering around a board squinting at tiny print.
I call it: The Boon Method.
Now, you’ve probably been to weddings where the table plan looks something like this:
- Table 1
- Table 2
- Table 3
- …all the way up to Table 20, 30, 40 etc
And under each table number? A long list of names.
Seems logical, right?
Wrong.

The Problem with Traditional Table Plans
Here’s what actually happens:
Guests walk up to the table plan…
They scan Table 1… nope.
Table 2… nope.
Table 3… still not there.
By the time they reach Table 14, they’ve forgotten which names they’ve already checked, someone’s standing too close, and there’s a mini traffic jam forming behind them.
But there’s another problem most people don’t even realise…
As guests scan each table, they’re also scanning who else is sitting there.
And human nature kicks in.
They start making snap judgments:
- “Oh… I don’t really know anyone on that table.”
- “Hmm… that table looks a bit quiet.”
- “Oh great, they’ve put all the fun people on that one!”
Before they’ve even found their own name, they’ve already formed an opinion about where they don’t want to be sitting.
It’s subtle—but it can affect their mood before they’ve even taken their seat.
The Boon Method: The Simple (and Brilliant) Solution
Instead of organising your table plan by tables…
Organise it alphabetically by guest name.
That’s it!
- List every guest in A–Z order
- Put their table number next to their name
For example:
- Adams, Sophie – Table 6
- Brown, Oliver – Table 12
- Clarke, Emily – Table 4
- Davies, James – Table 3
- Evans, Charlotte – Table 9
- Green, Thomas – Table 7
- Wilson, Lucy – Table 2
Now your guests don’t have to scan 20 different tables.
They simply:
- Find their name (which is quick and natural)
- Glance at the table number
- Head straight to their seat
No overthinking. No bottlenecks. No pre-judging the table before they even get there.
“But What About the Room Layout?”
Great question—and this is where you can have the best of both worlds.
You can absolutely include a simple diagram of the room layout alongside your alphabetical list.
This helps guests quickly orient themselves:
- Where is Table 1 in relation to the bar?
- Which side of the room is Table 12?
They find their name, spot their table number, glance at the layout—and off they go.
A Bonus Most Couples Miss
That layout isn’t just helpful for guests…
It’s incredibly useful for your venue staff too.
Because here’s the thing—staff don’t need to know that James is sitting next to Sophie on Table 6.
What they do need to know is:
- How many guests are on each table
- Which tables have dietary requirements
- How many of each starter or main are going where
- The order of service for each table
A clear layout helps the catering team work methodically and efficiently without confusion.
And Here’s Where It Gets Really Smart…
It doesn’t just help the venue—it helps your entertainment flow too.
As a wedding magician, timing is everything.
If I can see (or be told) the order of service, I can work around it seamlessly:
- I’ll start on tables that haven’t been served yet
- I avoid interrupting waiters while food is being delivered
- Then I naturally move on to tables that have already eaten and are relaxed
By the time I reach those early-served tables, plates are cleared, guests are settled, and they’re ready to enjoy the magic.
No interruptions. No awkward timing. Just a smooth, natural flow.
Why The Boon Method Works So Well
- It’s faster – guests instinctively know how to find their own name
- It reduces queues – no crowding around the board
- It removes pre-judgement – guests arrive at the table with an open mind
- It helps your suppliers – especially catering staff delivering a seamless service
- It improves timing across the day – from food service to entertainment
- It keeps everything flowing – which is exactly what you want on your big day
As a wedding magician, I spend a lot of time around receptions, and I see what works… and what really doesn’t.
This is one of those small tweaks that has a big impact.
So if you’re planning your big day and want everything to flow beautifully from the moment your guests walk into the room…
Ditch the traditional table plan—and use The Boon Method.
